Seems like sculptural figures from the other side of the wall surface in to our reality one body part at the time. Created by Canadian artist Ellen Jewett "Creatures From El" is collection of fascinating yet peculiar creatures - morphed flora and fauna into surrealistic mutant species frozen in movement. Almost like captured at the moment we woke up from a dream of captivating and mysterious imagery. It seems like body parts as characters in it's own right mutated into mechanical and bestial interlocking breeds. But, then again... maybe it's how these beasts see themselves? Turtle feels boged down by the weight, like it's a tree growing on it's shell, fast mountain lion feels like birds flying out of his body carrying him through the fastest of runs and desert fox feels elegance of swan wings - as vanity is it's blessing and it's curse... In 2011 Cuban artists Erik Rovelo of "Fabrica" was commissioned by United Colors of Benetton to create art installations "Lana Sutra". As a tribute to Benetton's values of love and artistic expression, series of 15 sculpture installations were displayed in 3 Benetton stores - Milan, Istanbul and Munich. A series of culturally iconographic paper sculptures by Long-Bin Chen are intricately crafted from existing books, newspapers, and magazines. New York based artist Long-Bin Chen is known for transforming books, newspapers, and magazines into sculptures. Using locally printed materials (where he is an artist in residence) as his medium, he carefully carves figures from blocks of soft stacked paper--from warriors, to buddhas, to composers. at first glance, the highly-realistic three-dimensional works appear to be made from stone, but upon closer inspection, the viewer realizes the humble material which he has employed. Chen's commentary on social change seeks to connect ideas from the east, where he was born, with those of the west, where he resides. his creative practice at current sees him realizing large-scale buddha heads shaped from piles of telephone books, japanese warrior figures, and influential people from other cultures. Artist Sukhi Barber was born in England and, from a very young age, she was always interested in pursuing her artistic passions. After attending art school and completing her formal training in sculpture, she traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, and spent twelve years studying what she describes as the "timeless quality of peace and balance that she found in the art of Asia." Barber's human figures are a fascinating blend of her training in both sculpture and philosophy. Through her creative practice, she intends to bridge the cultures of East and West in which the peaceful essence of Buddhist tradition sits calmly in unison with the patterns and designs of a traditional bronze casting artform. In her sculptures, Barber produces a rich visual beauty with a compelling draw to Buddhist traditions. A few months ago we wrote about a couple of Stephen Shaheen's humorous yet strange sculptures that adorn lightbulb heads. We get such a kick out of his work, we've decided to feature a few more of the Brooklyn-based sculptor's collection. The one that stands out the most is aptly titled Let's Put Our Heads Together (above). It features three blue men bent over with their heads collectively in the middle.
