His largest and most ambitious work to date, In Orbit by Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno is the closest one may ever come to feeling like a spider. Working with a team of architects, engineers and biologists over a three year period, Saraceno is finally ready to debut this monumental mesh construction that suspends over 25 meters above the piazza of the K21 Standehaus museum in Dusseldorf, Germany. On June 22, visitors will be able to climb on the gigantic steel wire construction that spans three levels. The mesh net alone weighs three tons and there are half a dozen "spheres" or inflated PVC balloons positioned within it. No joke, for this installation, the artist studied the methods of various spiders to see how they constructed their intricate webs. For the last few years, Volvo has set up an art display in the Zurich, Switzerland central train station called the Volvo Art Session, allowing select artists – both established and up-and-coming – to create temporary exhibits with one of Volvo's products acting as the centerpiece. This year, six artists from across Europe converged in Zurich to turn a 2014 Volvo XC60 into a work of art. Each started with a blank white canvas, creating a massive display in what Volvo says is one of the busiest covered public places in Europe, and after each was done, it was all erased for the next artists to come in and do his or her thing. Portland artist Eric Franklin (previously) just completed three new works, a trio of neon glass skulls lit internally by ionized neon, krypton, and mercury. The structure of each human skull is deviously complex, made from a network of glass tubes that have to be perfectly sealed to create the vacuum necessary to light them, a process that leaves the figures somewhat misshapen and admittedly a bit creepy. As a child, the clink of Legos knocking around a big bin stirred Nathan Sawaya’s creativity. Not much has changed. The 39-year-old Manhattan artist stores more than 1.5 million Legos in his Lexington Ave. studio, organized in clear plastic containers by shape and color and stacked neatly onto shelves that reach well past his head. The studio is filled with Lego artwork that has been featured in galleries around the world — garish skulls, leaping human figures, a pacing, caramel-colored dog, the goggling, pixelated head of Homer Simpson.
